These Amazing Facts About Our Earth Will Blow Your Mind

These Amazing Facts About Our Earth Will Blow Your Mind (Interestingawesome.blogspot.com)

Earth is our home planet. And is the only planet in our solar system known to harbor life. Earth is the third planet from the Sun and it is the only planet in our solar system not to be named after a Greek or Roman deity. Earth can be studied with the aid of spacecraft, books and of course, with the internet. Earth is made up of complex, interactive systems that are often unpredictable. Air, water, land, and life including humans combine forces to create a constantly changing world that we are striving to understand. So we began to search an answers for our burning questions about mother Earth. Scientists around the world have discovered many things about our planet by working together and sharing their findings. Some facts are well known, some are mysteries, some are mind blowing, and some are true but hard to believe. So take a little journey with us because we are going to highlight some of the best, amazing  true facts about our world. This is the 2nd part of the post,Awesome Facts About Earth (Part 1).
  1. The surface we walk on is recycled. Earths rock cycle transforms igneous rocks to sedimentary rocks and then to metamorphic rocks and back again.
  2. Auroras very beautiful and sometimes weird. The atmosphere is responsible for auroras that occur when solar wind particles hit atoms in the upper atmosphere of the Earth, thereby creating beautiful views of light. Red and blue auroras are created by the excitation of nitrogen atoms, whereas green auroras and brownish-red auroras are from the excitation of oxygen.
  3. Every day our planet Earth is showered with dusts from space. On a daily basis, around 100 tons of interplanetary material usually in the form of dusts drifts down to the Earths surface. However, the tiniest particles are released by comets as their ices vaporize near the sun.
  4. There are around 22,000 man-made objects orbiting the Earth that are nearly 10 cm or even large. Around 5% of it comprises of functioning satellites and 8% of it comprises of sent rockets whereas the rest 87% of it comprises of fragments and inactive satellites.
  5. 99% of earths gold lies in the core which is enough to form a 1.5 foot coat around the surface of the earth. The temp of earths core is as hot as the surface of the sun i.e. 5500 C/9900 F. A solid Iron ball around 1500 miles wide sits at the center of the earth and the   pressure is so high that the iron cannot melt.
  6. Earths North Pole is moving. The magnetic North Pole is moving 10 miles per year northwards. Ultimately, our magnetic poles will be reversed but thats an event thousands of years away.
  7. The longest mountain range on Earth is actually underwater. It is called the mid ocean ridge system. It stretches for 80,000 km all around the world and is nearly 20 times longer than the longest range on the surface, the Andes Mountains. Not only that, the whole thing is completely volcanic.
  8. Build up from millions of tiny polyps, coral reefs are the largest living structures on the planet Earth. And when we say large we mean visible from space large! They also hold the highest density of life on earth, even more than rainforests.
  9. The oceans cover around 70 percent of Earths surface, yet humans have explored just 5 percent of it. These oceans hold over 20 million tons of gold. But it is so dilute that a liter of seawater contains approximately 13 billionths of a gram of gold. If we could get all of it, then each person on Earth could have 9 pounds of gold.
  10. Northernmost (and Largest) National Park is the world's largest and most northerly national park. It covers an area of 972,001 sq km (375,000 sq mi) and would be the 31st largest country in the world.
  11. Sakha Republic in Russia's Far East is the largest subnational governing body by area in the world at 3,083,523 sq kilometers (1,190,555 sq mi). It is the eighth largest territory in the world and is larger than Argentina and just smaller than India.
  12. The Oceanic Pole Of Inaccessibility, is defined as the place in the ocean that is farthest from land. It lies at in the South Pacific Ocean 2688km from the nearest lands.
  13. The remotest island in the world is Bouvet Island an uninhabited and small Norwegian island in the South Atlantic Ocean. The nearest land is the uninhabited Queen Maud Land, Antartica. over 1,600 km (994 mi) away to the south. The nearest inhabited land is Tristan da Cunha 2,260 km (1,404 mi) away.
  14. The remotest "major" (pop. >500,000) city in the world is Honolulu, Hawaii. There are no settlements within 3800 km of Honolulu having population larger than 50,000.
  15. The ice sheet over Antarctica is so heavy that it causes the bulge on our planet. The sheet is larger in area that the USA and measures over two miles in thickness, and in being so insanely massive, it has actually pushed the land mass that is Antarctica below sea level.
  16. In August 2011, scientists discovered an underground river located 4000 m below the Amazon river. It is around 6000 km long and its width ranges from 200 km  to 400 km (The Amazon is 6400 km long and has  width ranging from 1 km to 100 km). It is called Hamza after the name of its discoverer Valiya Hamza.
  17. The current record holder for the Wettest place on Earth is the cluster of hamlets known as Mawsynram in India. The result is an astonishing average annual rainfall of 11,871 mm (467.35). Even the worlds biggest statue, Rio de Janeiros 30m tall Christ the Redeemer, would be up to his knees in that volume of water.

  18. Antarctica is the highest, driest, and coldest continent on Earth.
  19. Earth is referred to as the BLUE PLANET. WHY? Because from space, the oceans combined with our atmosphere make our planet look blue.
  20. The Worlds largest hot desert is the Sahara in North Africa, at over 9,000,000 km², it is almost as large as the United States.
  21. Only 11 percent of the earth's surface is used to grow food.
  22. About 70% of the worlds fresh water is stored as glacial ice.
  23. The total surface area of the Earth is 197 million square miles.
  24. Lightning does not always create thunder. In April 1885, five lightning bolts struck the Washington Monument during a thunderstorm, yet no thunder was heard.
  25. One-tenth of the Earth's surface is always under the cover of ice. And almost 90 per cent of that ice is to be found in the continent of Antarctica.
  26. It takes about 63,000 trees to make the newsprint for the average Sunday edition of The New York Times.
  27. The air at the summit of Mount Everest, 29,029 feet is only a third as thick as the air at sea level.
  28. The fastest speed a falling raindrop can hit you is 18mph.
  29. The Earth is the densest planet in the Solar System. The average density of the Earth is approximately 5.52 grams per cubic centimetre.
  30. The Earth is, in fact, not really round. It is called an oblate spheroid meaning its slightly flattened on the top and bottom poles.
  31. If you could evaporate all the water out of all the oceans and spread the resulting salt over all the land on Earth, you would have a five hundred-foot layer coating everything.
  32. The Andes Mountain range in South America is 4,525 miles long and ranks, as the worlds longest(above the sea level). Second Longest: The Rockies; Third: Himalayas; Fourth: The Great Dividing Range in Australia; Fifth: Trans-Antarctic Mountains. This is a picture of Andes Mountain range.
  33. If you drilled a tunnel straight through the Earth and jumped in, it would take you about 42 minutes to get to the other side.
  34. Moon approximately 4.53 billion years ago is the subject of ongoing research. The working hypothesis is that it formed by accretion from material loosed from Earth after a Mars -sized object, named Theia, impacted Earth.  In this scenario, the mass of Theia was approximately 10% of that of Earth.
  35. Estimates on how much longer Earth will be able to continue to support life range from 500 million years , to as long as 2.3 billion years .
  36. Earth's internal heat comes from a combination of residual heat from planetary accretion (about 20%) and heat produced through radioactive decay (80%).  The major heat-producing isotopes within Earth are potassium-40 , uranium-238 , uranium-235 , and thorium-232 .
  37. At the center, the temperature may be up to 6,000 °C (10,830 °F), and the pressure could reach 360 GPa . And that temperature is equal  Sun's surface temperature.
  38. The fastest-moving plates are the oceanic plates, with the Cocos Plate advancing at a rate of 75 mm/year and the Pacific Plate moving 5269 mm/year. At the other extreme, the slowest-moving plate is the Eurasian Plate, progressing at a typical rate of about 21 mm/year.
  39. The deepest underwater location is Challenger Deep of the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean with a depth of 10,911.4 m.
  40. In total about 487 people have visited outer space and reached orbit as of 30 July 2010, and, of these, twelve have walked on the Moon. Much more than you imagined? And the farthest that humans have travelled from Earth is 400,171 km, achieved during the Apollo 13 mission in 1970.
