If you’re a human being, chances are you experience fear. Not only human, even every living things on the planet earth experience it. Fear is a feeling induced by perceived danger or threat that occurs in certain types of organisms , which causes a change in metabolic and organ functions and ultimately a change in behavior , such as fleeing, hiding, or freezing from perceived traumatic events. Fear in human beings may occur in response to a specific stimulus occurring in the present, or in anticipation or expectation of a future threat perceived as a risk to body or life. The fear response arises from the perception of danger leading to confrontation with or escape from/avoiding the threat (also known as the fight-or-flight response), which in extreme cases of fear ( horror and terror ) can be a freeze response or paralysis . Running from fear doesn’t work. We  have to face it and overcome it. That is the only way to get rid of the fear. So here are some fascinating facts about fear.

  1. In humans and animals, fear is modulated by the process of cognition and learning. Thus fear is judged as rational or appropriate and irrational or inappropriate. An irrational fear is called a phobia.
  2. Many physiological changes in the body are associated with fear, summarized as the fight-or-flight response. An inborn response for coping with danger, it works by accelerating the breathing rate ( hyperventilation), heart rate, constriction of the peripheral blood vessels leading to blushing and vasodilation of the central vessels (pooling), increasing muscle tension etc:-. And most importantly This primitive mechanism may help an organism survive by either running away or fighting the danger.
  3. In simple Fear is a vital response to physical emotional danger. If we didn't feel feel, we couldn't react to protect ourselves. "Fight & Flight" response in which the body prepares itself to either enter combat or run away - Biochemical.
  4. In a 2005 Gallup poll (U.S.), a national sample of adolescents between the ages of 13 and 17 were asked what they feared the most. The question was open-ended and participants were able to say whatever they wanted. The top ten fears were, in order: terrorist attacks , spiders , death , being a failure, war, criminal or gang violence, being alone , the future, and nuclear war .
  5.  In an estimate of what people fear the most, book author Bill Tancer analyzed the most frequent online queries that involved the phrase, "fear of..." following the assumption that people tend to seek information on the issues that concern them the most. His top ten list of fears published 2008 consisted of flying, heights , clowns , intimacy , death, rejection ,people , snakes , failure, and driving .
  6. Fear is divided into two stages; Biochemical (Universal) & Emotional (Highly individualised).
  7. Experience of fear may be influenced by social norms and values, fear is an innate response. It is fundamental to the biological makeup of animals.
  8. In controlling/manipulating ones own fear (or another’s) one also has the potential to control a central aspect of human behavior.
  9. Fears are not caused by one big event that happened to you. If you have been attributing your fear of heights to that terrible fall you experienced when you were three, you might be surprised to find out you are probably wrong. Fears develop through a complex mix of genetics and environment.
  10. There is a very strong relationship between age and the types of fears that people report in many different cultures. It means that there is something fundamental about the development, as it relates to fear. For example, Early in our childhood, fear of strangers and fear of separation are very common.
  11. People with anxiety disorders exhibit normal fear responses to scary situations. They only experience higher amounts of fear and anxiety to specific situations.
  12. Fearless individuals do not have normal fear responses to scary situations. Unlike people with anxiety disorders, who have normal fear responses to scary situations, fearless people do not. Fearless people are fearless, even during scary situations. A fearless person would be calm even they are about to die.
  13. Fear motivated thoughts are all about “can’t.” They create a negative, imagined scenario about the future. Here’s the truth: you don’t know what is going to happen, so these thoughts can’t possibly be true. So stay always positive, and face the fear.
  14. Fearful thoughts are designed to keep you safe and limited . But fearless person don't know their limits causing them to attract troubles.
  15. Resisting fear strengthens it . The antidote is awareness  being willing to directly experience fear as it appears to you in the moment, recognizing the thoughts and physical sensations.
  16. The goal is not to get rid of fear , as you don’t have the power to make this happen. But you do have the power to change the way you relate to fear.Learn to receive it with curiosity and face it it lovingly every time.
  17. Recognizing the presence of fear allows you to make conscious decisions. You have the clarity to see what fear is guiding you to do, and you can consider what you really want.
  18. Positive or negative response. Positive is in the form of an adrenaline rush while Negative is avoiding it at all costs. Although, the physical reaction is the same, fear may be perceived as either positive or negative.
  19. When you're afraid you're heart races, your body initiates fight or flight reaction. Stress and fear are likely to increase the risk of heart disease, cancer & chronic lung disease. Fear by itself could lead to ill health.
  20. More than 100 billion nerve cells comprise and intricate network of communications that is the starting point of everything we sense, think and do. Some communication lead to consious thought/action. Others produce autonamic responses.

Cells in the brain are constantly transfering info & triggering responses, dozens of areas of the brain are involved; Thalamus - decides where to send incoming sensory data (from eyes/ears, etc), Sensory Cortex - Interprets sensory data, Hippocampus - Stores/Retrieves conscious memories, processes sets of stimuli to estrablish context, Amygdala - decodes emotions, determines possible threats, stores fear memories. Hypothalamus activates fight or flight response.
  22. Used in the wild, especially with animals. Lions "scare" prey, then the preys body stiffens making it easy to catch.
  23. In extreme situation, when you can't  bear the fear you will become unconscious.
  24. Since fear is so important to survival, nature made sure the brain’s fear center, the amygdala, has a backup. For some time, researchers knew that when damaged, another part of the brain took over its job. Tests determined that this part is the bed nuclei .
  25. Brain chemicals called endocannabinoids belong to the same group of cannabinoids that make marijuana such a worldwide favorite. The ones the brain produces possibly exist to overwrite bad memories.
