Some Interesting, Lesser Known Facts About Water(P1)

Some Interesting, Lesser Known Facts About Water(P1)(Interestingawesome.blogspot.com)

Water is the most essential thing for every living thing that exist on this planet. And it is the most simple, and most common liquid on Earth . It covers about 71.4% of the Earth .Pure water has no smell, taste, or color. Lakes , oceans, and rivers are made of water. Water is very important for life. However, some studies suggest that by 2025 more than half the people around the world will not have enough water. So we must protect our ever water sources. Like I mentioned above, water is the most simple and common liquid that exist on this planet. But at the same time, water conceals many mysteries. It still continues to investigate the scientists finding more interesting data on the water. Here are some cool, lesser known facts about water you must know.

  1. Water is a fluid . And it is the only chemical substance on earth that exists naturally in three states.
  2. Water is a molecule made of 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom. Its chemical formula is H2 O.
  3. Pure water (solely hydrogen and oxygen atoms) has a neutral pH of 7, which is neither acidic nor basic.
  4. Water should be a gas at room temperature  all similar molecules, such as hydrogen sulphide (H2S) and ammonia (NH3), are gases. The stickiness of water molecules holds them together as a liquid.
  5. And here are some numbers about water. Water covers 71% of the Earth's surface.   On Earth, 96.5% of the planet's crust water is found in seas and oceans, 1.7% in groundwater, 1.7% in glaciers and the ice caps of Antarctica and Greenland, a small fraction in other large water bodies, and 0.001% in the air as vapor , clouds , and precipitation .
  6. Only 2.5% of this water is freshwater , and 98.8% of that water is in ice (excepting ice in clouds) and groundwater . Less than 0.3% of all freshwater is in rivers, lakes, and the atmosphere, and an even smaller amount of the Earth's freshwater (0.003%) is contained within biological bodies and manufactured products.  A greater quantity of water is found in the earth's interior.
  7. Water also differs from most liquids, such as alcohol or oil. When water freezes , it expands by about 9%.The maximum density of water is 1,000 kg/m 3 (62.43 lb/cu ft), that occurs at 3.98 °C (39.16 °F), whereas the density of ice is 917 kg/m 3 (57.25 lb/cu ft). Thus, water expands 9% in volume as it freezes, which accounts for the fact that ice floats on liquid water. This expansion can cause pipes to break if the water inside them freezes.
  8. Again, that expansion is very powerful, and almost every time, this expansion can split any kind of rock if it freeze when liquid water struck inside of a rock.
  9. Water on Earth moves continually through the water cycle of evaporation and transpiration ( evapotranspiration ), condensation ,precipitation , and runoff , usually reaching the sea. This means every drop of water we are using is literally millions of years old.
  10. Access to safe drinking water has improved over the last decades in almost every part of the world, but approximately one billion people still lack access to safe water and over 2.5 billion lack access to adequate sanitation .
  11. However, some observers have estimated that by 2025 more than half of the world population will be facing water based vulnerability. A report, issued in November 2009, suggests that by 2030, in some developing regions of the world, water demand will exceed supply by 50%.
  12. At the top of Mount Everest , where the atmospheric pressure is about 0.34 atm, water boils at 68 °C (154 °F).
  13. At very low pressures (below about 0.006 atm), water cannot exist in the liquid state, and passes directly from solid to gas by sublimation a phenomenon exploited in the freeze drying of food.
  14. If all that water was evenly spread over the Earth’s surface it would have a depth of 3,700 meters .
  15. The Antarctic has been covered in ice for more than 30m years . Right now, it is covered by 10 thousand trillion tons of snow and ice.
  16. Pure water is usually described as tasteless and odorless, although humans have specific sensors that can feel the presence of water in their mouths, and frogs are known to be able to smell it.
  17. Light in the visible electromagnetic spectrum can traverse a couple meters of pure water (or ice) without significant absorption , so that it looks transparent and colorless.(Below is a picture of Melissani Lake, Greece. This considered to be the clearest and purest water on the planet. You even can't see the line that separate water surface and the boat)
  18. Thus aquatic plants, algae , and other photosynthetic organisms can live in water up to hundreds of meters deep, because sunlight can reach them.
  19. Much of the universe's water is produced as a byproduct of star formation. The formation of stars is accompanied by a strong outward wind of gas and dust. When this outflow of material eventually impacts the surrounding gas, the shock waves that are created compress and heat the gas. The water observed is quickly produced in this warm dense gas.
  20. A 2.6 billion year old pocket of water was discovered in a mine, 2 miles below the earth’s surface.
  21. At any given moment, groundwater is 20 to 30 times greater than the amount in all the lakes, streams, and rivers of the United States.
  22.   It takes 450 liters (120 gallons) of water to produce one egg.
  23. The largest selling brand of bottled water (Aquafina) is treated tap water packaged by Pepsi. Not to be outdone, Coke sells it under the label Dasani.
  24. Freshwater animals are disappearing five times faster than land animals.
  25. It takes 5,680 liters (1,500 gallons) of water to process one barrel of beer.
  26.  At birth, water accounts for approximately 80 percent of an infant’s body weight
  27. To process one chicken we need 44 liters (11.6 gallons) of water.
  28.  To process one can of fruit or vegetables we need 35 liters (9.3 gallons) of water.
  29.  It takes 7,000 liters (1,850 gallons) of water to refine one barrel of crude oil.
  30. To manufacture new cars 148,000 liters (39,000 gallons) of water are used per car.
  31. An estimated 1000 children die everyday in India due to polluted water.
  32. An estimated 1000 children die everyday in India due to polluted water.
  33. 14 billion pounds of garbage mostly plastic, is dumped into the ocean every year.
  34. At least 320 million people in china don't have access to clean drinking water.
  35. According to UNESCO, the pure water is in Finland. A total of fresh natural water 122 countries participated. While 1 billion people worldwide have no access to safe water. A five-minute shower uses 200 liters of water .
  36.  You use 8 liters to flush a toilet about the same as you use to brush your teeth.
  37. It takes 200 liters of water to produce the coffee beans for one cup of coffee.
  38.  It takes 15,000 liters of water to produce 1 kg of beef.
  39. It takes 100 liters to make 2 slices of bread and 65 liters to make the cheese filling in your sandwich.
  40. Water is sticky. The molecules love to stick to things, especially each other. It’s what gives it such a large surface tension . It keeps you alive: it means water can pull blood up narrow vessels in the body, often against the force of gravity.
